What To Do When You Really Want To Quit

Here we are almost in March. How is your year going? Are you making progress on those goals you set in the beginning of 2019? 

If you are — awesome. Keep up the good work! And if you’ve stalled, lost steam or haven’t made any progress at all, let me tell you two things:  

  1. You’re not alone.

  2. Don’t give up now!

I’ve seen this with many people — friends, family, clients, and myself: we set an intention, take action and start working toward our goal, and then all of a sudden something happens to halt our progress. Life gets hard, competing priorities come up, we get tired, etc. The reality of the daily work it takes to keep progressing toward the goal sets in. And it makes us think it’s time to quit.

Are You Giving Your Power Away? (Here's What to Do About It)

There’s an interesting phenomenon that shows up in my coaching work. I’ve noticed that many of my clients tend to come to our sessions with similar themes. Clients who have no relationship to each other struggle with very similar things — all at the same time. I have no other way to explain it, other than it must be some mysterious universal force at work. 

Recently the theme among my clients has been all about making decisions and taking actions that may at first seem like the right move, but when we looked closer, were really not the best decisions and were actually choices that would cost them something. In some cases, my clients were repeating old behaviors that simply do not serve them. And the overarching theme? All of them were giving their power away.

Are You Making The Most Powerful Choice?

Today I want to share a personal anecdote with you because I think it’s a good example of something I talk to my clients about all the time — making powerful choices. 

A few months back, I set a new intention to get into a routine of self care and physical fitness. I’ve found that I have the best results when I have an event or competition to train for and to look forward to. My running partners and I — the Three Amigo’s Runners Club — as we like to call ourselves, agreed to run an upcoming half marathon in NYC together.

Shortly thereafter, one of my buddies was also afforded the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon. To support him, the third amigo and I decided we wanted to up our game too. So I started thinking about what kind of competition I could do to really challenge myself.
